Summary

“The Storm,” like many of Kate Chopin’s short stories, is set in a rural Louisiana town in the antebellum South. As Bobinôt and his little son Bibi sit at Friedheimer’s store, they observe the world around them as it grows still before clouds roll in, bringing a wild storm. Father and son decide to wait out the storm at the store, and Bibi worries that his mother, Calixta, will be afraid because she is alone in the house. Bibi, a serious boy, keeps track of the household schedule and knows that the girl who sometimes helps his mother is not on duty that day.

Bobinôt reassures his son, who is not afraid for himself—only for his mother. Bobinôt decides to buy his wife a treat, a can of shrimps that he knows she likes. The storm rages.
