Overview

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” is considered by many to be the first modern detective story. Originally published in 1841 in Graham's Magazine, the story introduces C. Auguste Dupin, an eccentric French consulting detective, and his unique brand of analytical thinking as he solves a pair of gruesome murders in a small Parisian neighborhood. Establishing classic tropes such as the detective’s adoring sidekick and the locked-room crime scene, the story completely revolutionized the mystery genre, influencing writers like Arthur Conan Doyle and Dorothy L. Sayers.
