Overview

“Girl”, a 1978 short story by Antiguan-American author Jamaica Kincaid, is a one-sentence, 650-word monologue in which a mother delivers a series of instructions to her daughter. The story is a complex examination of the relationship between mother and daughter, as well as a critique of the gender roles and expectations that shape their lives. It is often read as a coming-of-age story, as well as a commentary on the legacy of colonialism in the Caribbean.
