Overview

“Jabberwocky” is a mock-serious poem that was first published as a part of Lewis Carroll’s 1871 children’s book, Through the Looking-Glass. However, the poem’s joyfully nonsensical language has given it a life of its own that goes far beyond the book. Indeed, the poem has been set to music and has inspired adaptations for both stage and screen. Perhaps most interestingly, the poem has been translated into over 65 languages—a supremely impressive feat, given that Carroll himself made up many of the words himself.
