Overview

The English Patient, a 1992 novel by Michael Ondaatje, is a work of historical fiction that explores themes of love, war, and identity. The novel is set in an abandoned Italian villa at the end of World War II and tells the story of four individuals brought together by the war: Hana, a Canadian nurse; Caravaggio, a Canadian thief and spy; Kip, an Indian soldier in the British army; and the titular English patient, a mysterious man who has been burned beyond recognition. The English Patient won the Booker Prize in 1992 and was adapted into a film in 1996 that won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Anthony Minghella.
