Overview

Sandra Cisneros (b. 1954) is a poet, essayist, novelist, and short story writer. She first published “Woman Hollering Creek” in 1991. In the story, Cleófilas marries and leaves her home in Mexico to start a new life with her new husband in Texas. Unfortunately, her romanticized ideas of love and marriage are crushed by abuse, isolation, and poverty. Cisneros explores universally understood issues, such as family, identity, gender roles, and violence, from the perspective of a Mexican-American woman.
