Overview

Liam O’Flaherty’s short story set in war-torn Dublin, “The Sniper,” was first published in 1923. It appeared in a socialist London publication, The New Leader, and its literary value was soon recognized by an influential editor, Edward Garnett. The tale of two snipers facing each other across a Dublin street launched O’Flaherty’s long career as a writer. Borrowing on O’Flaherty’s experiences of the Irish Civil War, “The Sniper” reveals bitter truths about the conflict, its atrocities, the divisions in Ireland, and the fact that at day’s end, combatants share a common humanity.
