Overview

Katherine Mansfield (1888–1923) was a New Zealand-born poet and master of the short story. She published “The Garden Party” in 1922 near the very end of her short career and life. The story follows Laura, whose upper-class family is preparing a garden party. Their perfect summer day is marred by the death of their working-class neighbor, Mr. Scott. The story still resonates over 100 years later because of Mansfield’s poetic prose and her astute exploration of class inequalities, family relationships, and death.
