Overview

First published in The New Yorker magazine in 1999, Alice Munro’s “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” is a short story dealing with themes of love, loyalty, and aging. It is part of the Nobel Prize-winning Canadian author’s 2001 collection Hateship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage. In 2006, Away from Her, a film adaptation written and directed by Sarah Polley, garnered multiple awards, including Academy Award nominations for Polley and for Julie Christie, who portrayed Fiona.
