Overview

English author Virginia Woolf released “A Haunted House” in her self-published short story collection Monday or Tuesday in 1921. As one of the great forces in English literature, Woolf was a prolific writer and pioneer of the Modernist literary movement. She rebelled against traditional linear storytelling to find new ways of examining human experience in a rapidly changing world. Woolf’s pioneering qualities are reflected in the style and content of “A Haunted House.” In the story, the living narrator describes the movements of a ghostly couple who are searching for a lost treasure in the house they share with the narrator and the narrator’s partner. The very short but timeless tale explores life, death, and the significance of enduring love.
